Kariye Mosque Tickets overview

About Kariye Mosque:

Kariye Mosque, formerly known as the Chora Church, is a historical structure located in the Edirnekapı district of Istanbul. Originally built as part of a Byzantine monastery complex in the 4th century, the present building dates mainly to the 11th and 12th centuries, with significant additions and restorations carried out in the 14th century. It was converted into a mosque in the early 16th century following the Ottoman conquest and later functioned as a museum in the 20th century. It has since been re-designated as a mosque.

The interior is known for its extensive cycle of mosaics and frescoes, which depict biblical narratives, the life of Christ, and the Virgin Mary. These artworks are notable for their composition, detail, and preservation, offering insight into late Byzantine visual culture. The structure itself is relatively modest in scale but features a complex plan with a narthex, nave, side chapels, and domed ceilings that reflect the architectural practices of its time.

The site maintains a quiet atmosphere and allows for observation of both its religious function and historical layers. From the courtyard, views of the surrounding city provide context to its location within the urban and cultural landscape of Istanbul.
