How To Reach Topkapi Palace

1. By Road: From the city centre of Istanbul (Taksim Square area), Topkapı Palace is 5.4 kilometres away.

2. By Bus: Multiple bus lines stop near Sultanahmet, the closest area to Topkapı Palace. Some buses operating on this route are 28T, 30D, 46C, 47E, 99A, EM1 and BN1. The nearest bus stop to the Palace is Akbıyık, located 700 metres, or a 10-minute walk away. 

3. By Car: If driving, the most direct route is via Gülhane Parkı and Kennedy Avenue, which runs along the coast of the Sea of Marmara. This 5.4-kilometre journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Upon reaching, you can park your car at the Sports Car Park or Otopark, both of which are about a 10-minute walk (2.1 kilometres) from the Palace.

4. By Tram: The T1 tram line is the most efficient route by tram to the Topkapı Palace. The tram stops at Gülhane İstasyonu, 500 metres or 8 minutes from the Palace. Alternatively, you can get off at Sultanahmet Station, 400 metres or a 5-minute walk away. 

5. By Metro: The nearest metro station is Vezneciler on the M2 line. You can switch to the T1 tram line at Laleli-Üniversite or catch a taxi to the Palace.

6. By Ferry: You can also reach Topkapı Palace by ferry if you are coming from the Asian side of Istanbul or from along the Bosphorus. Ferries dock at Eminönü or Karaköy, and from there, you can walk or take the tram to Sultanahmet.

Is Topkapi Palace free?

It is free for children below the age of 8 and above that, you need to pay 72 Turkish Liras (or 850 INR) to enter the palace. However, this is pertaining to the main entrance and a few other sections for important interior sections such as the Harem or the Church of Hagia Irene. For the harem, you need to pay an extra 42 Turkish liras or 495 INR and the best option would be to take an Istanbul Travel Pass as this will give you access to all parts of Topkapi palace.
