About Karnataka

Revered with a varied makeup conforming to all the flirtation and courtship of typical India, Karnataka is an amalgam of crowning destinations, mega cities, tiger reserves, beaches, legendary hang out zones and ancient ruins. With the coastline encompassed by the pleasant palm beaches and the spectacular beauty amplified by the historical temples, Karnataka indeed is an ideal tourist place in India.

Majorly driven by the silicon-capital Bengaluru, brimming with superior life and lifestyle, Karnataka has its own platter composed of flavors, activities, things to do and enormous places to see. Enveloping the sybaritic city are lush green hills dotted with aromatic coffee and spice plantations, massive population of elephants (highest in Asia), tigers, resplendent majesty of Mysore and thick jungles overfed with monkeys.

Does this all sound cliché to you? Well, head forth to the counter cultural enclave of pristine Hampi that is teeming with archaic temple ruins, hammocks and enchanting sunsets. Explore the sculptural wonders of Karnataka by taking a visit to Halebid, Belur and Mysore that narrates the saga of the archaic past and speaks volumes of the sculptural wonder. It does not end here either. Take a deeper plunge in the beauty of Karnataka with its Gokarna that is a beach haven bereft the hullabaloo. Or rather, just leave the tourist trail for a while and take an odyssey to the magnificent Islamic ruins in the northern end of the state.

Our Recommendations: What you can’t afford to miss?

Belur
Situated about 165 km from Mangalore, 217 km from Bangalore and 154 km from Mysore, Belur is an extremely popular temple town that is situated in the Hassan District of the state of Karnataka. The town is known for its ostentatious Hoysala Temple that is dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the three Hoysala temples are particularly famous for their intricate and minute sculptures and cravings with metal like polishing. This is one of the best heritage sites of Karnataka and is indeed a prominent tourist place.

Bangalore
Situated nearly 139 km from Mysore and 347 km from Chennai, Bangalore also known as Bengaluru is the 5th largest city in India. It is the third most populous cities in India and is often referred to as the Silicon Valley (given the vast IT firms and companies located here) and the Garden City of India (given the enormous parks and gardens found here). Bangalore is extremely popular for its nightlife and is an ideal place for anyone planning to visit Southern India. Some of the must visit attractions in Bangalore include Lalbagh Garden, Nandi Hills, Tipu Sultan's Palace, Vishveswaraiah Museum, Bannerghatta National Park, Cubbon Park, HAL Aerospace Museum, ISKCON Temple, Vidhana Soudha, Bull Temple and Bangalore Palace.

Bandipur National Park
Located 70 kms from Ooty, Bandipur National Park is definitely one of the well preserved National Parks in India. Spanning over an area of 874 sq. km., the altitude of this park varies from 780 to 1455 meters. Along with Nagarhole National Park, Bandipur National Park is also a part of the phenomenally prominent Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. This once used to be the game and recreation reserve for the Maharajas from Mysore. Declared a National Park in the year 1974, the park houses 3000 Asian elephants, 70 tigers along with other animals such as dhole, leopards, sloth bears, gaur along with a number of birdlife. You can try activities like Elephant Safari – INR 50 per head, Mini Bus Safari – INR 75 per head and Jeep Safari – INR 300 per head, here.

Chikmagalur

Located 240 km from Bangalore, Chikmagalur or Chikkamagaluru is located at an altitude of 3,400 feet on the foothills of the Mulliyangiri range. This is one of the top hills stations of Karnataka state and is famous for its tall mountains, lush green surroundings and serene environment. The place is particularly known for its coffee. What’s surprising is that coffee was cultivated for the first time here in India. Other prominent sightseeing spots of Chikmagalur are Ayyanakere Lake, Belavadi, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Amruthapura, Hirekolale Lake, Baba Budangiri, Manikyadhara Falls, Kemmanagundi and Mulliyangiri.

Coorg
Located 362 km from Kochi, Coorg is a beautiful district in Karnataka. It lies at an altitude of 1525 meters on Western Ghats and is known as the Scotland of India. This is another important hill station that you just cannot miss. Legends say that, Coorg is named after the River Cauvery. Thick tea and coffee plantations, undulating streets, misty hills, orange groves, breathtaking views and lush forests have made Coorg a prominent holiday destination.

What you will like there?

Mouth Watering Food
Are you a foodie at heart? If yes, visiting Karnataka would be an excellent choice to make. Dosa at Uudpi, Pandi curry from Coorg, fish curry from Mangalore and South Indian deserts such as ‘Dharwad pedha’ and ‘Mysore pak’ are indeed some dishes to look forward to.

Waterfalls
Apart from the many waterfalls of Karnataka, the two waterfalls that you’ll particularly like here are the Jog Falls and the Shivanasamudra Falls. Jog Falls is one of the highest plunge waterfalls of India and Shivanasamudra is a natural beauty that is equally beautiful.

Monsoon
Rare are the places in India that actually get beautiful in monsoon and Karnataka is definitely on the top. The surroundings get greener and the different silver streams cascade from the mountains bringing forth an unparalleled view that is savored by nature lovers across the country.

Coffee
Coffee is the favorite beverage of many in the world. If you haven’t brewed the coffee from Chikmagalur, your tour to Karnataka is incomplete. You can find umpteen number of little coffee shops in every nook and corner of Karnataka.

Architecture
Karnataka has several architectural marvels that will leave you spell bound. The Rock Cut Caves of Karnataka are definitely one of the most scenic structures here. Apart from this, the Bhutnatha Temple which is an amalgam of Jain and Dravidian style of architecture is simply spectacular.
