Bird Island is formerly known as the Ile Aux Vaches due to the dugongs that once thrived in the waters of this region between 1896 to 1906. It is the northernmost island of the Archipelago of Seychelles spreading over 94 sq. km. Earlier the island was a prime site for coconut plantation and cultivation of cash crops viz. papaya and cotton.
